Welcome Back Letter
We are excited about the upcoming school year. We have several new staff members at Jackson School. This year Carmen Glaister from Pleasant Grove and Ashlie Oliver from Lake View have joined our fifth grade team. Susan Heffington has come from Lake Forest to join our second grade team and Paige Smith from Rescue is our TK teacher this year. Mila Olson is our new instrumental band teacher. We have three new instructional aides in the all-day Kindergarten program, they are: Debbie Mackey, Amiee Hepler, and Melanie McGinnis. We look forward to welcoming them all to our staff!
We have put in a beautiful, new track around the field over the summer- take a look when you get a chance. The field is in the process of getting new plumbing for the sprinkler system so it is not green at this point, but it should be up and running in a couple weeks. The black top and the Kindergarten play yard have both been resurfaced and sealed and painted.
We have adopted STEMscope as our science program this year. STEMscope is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and has a “hands on” component, technology component, engineering component, as well as student in-depth investigations utilizing scientific concepts. In addition, we have added a robotics class to the 4/5th elective wheel. We are adding a 3D printer to the 4/5th technology elective and we are going to be adding animation software to the Video Lab elective. Thank you to all of you who have supported our school through our PTO functions- these are YOUR dollars at work!
Over the summer I took a class on Makerspace and Design Thinking/Learning. I am excited to embark on creating Makerspace corners in our classrooms where students can produce original creations when they have choice time in the afternoons. In order to do this I will be purchasing some materials for all of the classrooms. If you have any Legos, Tinker Toys, blocks, Erector sets, etc. and you would like to donate them to your child’s classroom please let me know. I will be working with teachers this year to share what I have learned about Design Thinking and Makerspace. Our STEMscope science program utilizes the Design Thinking philosophy. We will also be utilizing this philosophy in our 4/5th grade electives this year. In addition, I will be visiting the “Stanford d.school” at Stanford University which teaches the Design Learning/Thinking methods. I will be bringing a member of our School Site Council as well as a PTO Board Member with me so we can bring back ideas to implement at Jackson.
We will have another group of students visiting from China around September 23rd, we really need your help securing host families to house our guests. We need the names of any interested families ASAP; please reach out to me right away if you can provide housing for a Chinese student.
The school parking lot was the biggest concern expressed by parents on the district LCAP survey. This year we have all new signage for the parking lot. It is imperative that parking lot protocol is followed this year. Cars cannot be left unattended in the parking lot loop for any reason during drop off and pick up times. We have VERY limited space to move cars through the loop because the EDH Fire Department required that a red zone be painted at the beginning of the loop so the fire engines can make the turn in an emergency without being obstructed by parked cars. I will be doing parking lot duty for the first few weeks of school to ensure a smooth transition for our parking lot policies. We must enforce these policies for student safety and time efficiency for working parents.
Please make sure you have re-registered your child on the parent portal at Aeries.net. By re-registering, parents can update student information, electronically sign off on documents that must be read and/or signed, and accept or deny authorizations.
I am very excited about this school year and I am looking forward to an exceptional year for our students. School starts at 8:45 am and ends at 3:00 pm. The TK program ends at 12:05 pm and the all-day Kindergarten program ends at 12:45 pm the first six weeks of school. The bell schedule and school calendar are both available on the school web site. I can be reached at (916) 933-1828 if you have any questions or concerns.
Please return the following forms to your teacher by Friday, August 11th.
- Heath Concerns
- Rainy Day Permission Slip
- Library Celebration Book Club (optional)
We appreciate you support and look forward to a terrific year!
