Dress Code: Students are required to dress in appropriate clothes on the day of their PE class. Each day they will receive 8 points towards their PE grade for being appropriately dressed. They need to have:
Tennis shoes that lace up
Pants or shorts that they can move in
A shirt that doesn't show their midriff when their arms are raised up
P.E. Grading Policy: In P.E. I am looking for being appropriately dressed for class, participation, sportsmanship, running the mile, and skill improvement within each sport or category we are learning. Daily observations will be made during the year in order to reveal consistency and improvement. Here are examples of positive traits that I am looking for in physical education class.
1. Tries all activities
2. Consistently gives maximum effort
3. Shows concerns for others
4. Listens to and applies direction
5. Shows enthusiasm
6. Participates with all students
7. Shares ideas with teacher and class
8. Has a positive attitude
9. Shows good sportsmanship
10. Shows skill improvement
Grades: You will be able to follow your student's progress and see their grades by logging into the Jupiter Grades account that their classroom teachers have set up.
Behavior Expectations: In physical education I expect the children to participate, follow directions, respect themselves and others, have a positive attitude, use equipment appropriately, and try their best. I do not expect everyone to be great at every sport, but I would like them to try new things with a positive attitude.
Parent Communication: If you ever have any questions or concerns you can reach me at tnichols@my.rescueusd.org or you can call my classroom at 916-933-1828 extension 5061. You will be able to follow your student's progress and see their grades by logging onto the Jupiter Grades account that their classroom teacher has set up.
Mile Run: Once the weather cools down, we will be working on the mile run. We will be starting in September or October with a 15 minute target mile. The following month the target will drop down to a 14 minute mile and each month after that I will drop a minute off of their time until we get down to a 10 minute mile. Those that want an extra challenge can continue to drop their time. With a little preparation the students will be very prepared for their physical fitness testing in 5th grade as well as their middle school physical education experience.
Unit Plans: We will be breaking the year up into thematic units while addressing California's Physical Education Standards. You can click on the link here to see the standards or you can find these standards at: http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/pestandards.pdf. We will start out the year with volleyball and move into other units like: square dancing, basketball, flag football, racket sports, wiffle ball, Frisbee, and even a nutrition unit over the rainy season.
Water Bottles: Each student must bring a water bottle to P.E. as our water fountains are disabled. Water has many great benefits, including helping to regulate the body's temperature, help digest food and carry nutrients throughout our bodies. During physical education class, the student will be working hard and they will be thirsty, having a water bottle within their reach makes class a little easier.
Masks and Hand Washing: Each class will begin and end each clas with the students washing their hands at our hand washing station. When the students are in the P.E. classroom or walking to and from P.E. they will be required to wear a mask. During outside activities the students will be able to remove their masks. Tables and chairs have been spaced accordingly in the classroom to allow for extra spacig between the students. Studends will be encouraged to keep their hands away from their faces during our activities.
Spare the Air: During the year we will be using the Spare the Air App and website to determine how clean our air quality is, unclean or smoky air will result in P.E. class being moved inside the classroom. Here is the website for your convenience: http://www.sparetheair.com/ .
